Peanuts

peanutsPeanuts are among the most popular foods, and one of the most misunderstood.  A peanut is not really a nut, but rather a legume, grown in the soil rather than on trees.

Peanuts originated in South America, probably in Brazil and Peru.  Spanish and Portugese explorers were

responsible for introducing peanuts to North America, and around the latter part of the 16th Century, to West Africa (first the Senegambia area).  Peanut cultivation grew in Senegambia, initially as a backup crop to the millet harvest, but by 1830, as a separate, commercially viable product.

There are any number of uses for peanuts. Peanuts are enjoyed by themselves, salted or unsalted, and in the form of peanut products, such as peanut butter and peanut oil (also known as groundnut oil or arachis oil).

We buy peanuts directly from The Gambia’s farmers and proudly sell them to buyers around the world.  Our peanuts are known for their taste, quality and utility.
